Hello Security Token Market Family, we are back for our April monthly market report. If you missed the January, February, or March market reports, make sure to check them out!
The month of April was nothing short of turbulent in the US equity and global markets. With fears of Covid-19 continuing to mount and the uncertainty revolving around when life will return to normality — if ever, there isn't a whole lot of stability in the world right now. While the security token secondary market has performed very well in comparison to the public markets through March, it has unfortunately seen a drastic decline this month. With a total market cap decline of 8% and a trading volume decrease of 38%, this marks the worst month tracked in an STM market report to date.
tZERO, representing over 43% of the total industry market cap, was a leading factor in the overall market struggles, seeing a 53% drop in trading volume in April accompanied by a 17% decrease in price since March. Despite news that the long-awaited Overstock Digital Dividend has been confirmed to launch on May 19, 2020, investors were not satiated enough to maintain confidence in their investment. Potentially, additional live assets on the platform will lead to price recovery, but the timeline for new issuers onboarded seems murky at this time due to the company’s history of announcing new listings (example 1, example 2) without actually enabling trading for investors.
Unlike other tokenized assets, the real estate market continues to outperform even traditional equities markets. Across all six properties, not one finished in the red this month, with the properties closing up an average of 4.27% in April. On top of that, the properties pay double-digit interest per year, so the return for investors is closer to 6% in just the month of April. These assets are becoming a fantastic case-study in proving the security token use case and continue to sell out from investors all around the world. Issuance platform RealT is launching 3 more properties that should be included in May’s market report, and if they can continue building on their momentum, real estate properties may soon eclipse the market cap of many of the outstanding tokens on our platform!
On another positive note, issuer adoption of security tokens and Security Token Market continues to grow. During April, we were happy to announce the addition of two new security tokens listed on our platform to our market report. Both of the tokens added are equity-backed tokens of their respective companies.
The first new token we added was Mt. Pelerin, an asset tokenization platform based out of Switzerland. Mt. Pelerin is our first-ever international security token to be appended to our platform.
The second token we added was Startupbootcamp, a company that provides a network of industry-focused startup accelerators to support early-stage tech founders to rapidly scale their companies. Currently based out of London and trading on a newly-tracked exchange, Amsterdam-based Nxchange.
